Meet Daphne. She is one of the older residents at DARG, the animal rescue group that I have done a couple of paintings for.
This initiative, which was started by Sheila and Carrie, has taken on a life of its own in the USA. Hopefully it will progress to other countries across the world.
Daphne has been with DARG for some time now, and the hopes of her being re-homed are quite remote. It is scary the number of animals that are 'discarded' by people - they currently have a whole host of puppies that have been rescued and one puppy pitbull that is deaf.
I always feel so sad when I see the faces of all these lost animals. Thank goodness for organisations like DARG and thank goodness for people like Sheila and Carrie who give people like me an opportunity to help them.

oh, what a sweet face. It is heartbreaking to think she may not find a home. The "dumping" rate has increased here with the down economy. Our local shelter found 25 small dogs dumped on a rural road last month, they're guessing by an illegal breeder. You are great for doing this, as are Sheila and Carrie.
what a beautiful painting. You have really captured the face and mood. I wish the world were filled with people like you, Carrie and Sheila. We have been rescuing pugs at an alarming rate at Dallas Ft Worth pug rescue too - so many beautiful babies needing homes.

You can check out the marvelous Dutch blog I belong to (Post Your Dog) and find photos and stories not only of my cats but of the different dogs I've rescued (or helped to rescue) in my neighborhood. I don't have to look for them - they appear in my yard!
Liz, Such a wonderful job of capturing the playful and sweet nature I just KNOW this dog has. These stories are sad, I don't understand people sometimes! We so often don't deserve the love and loyalty these animals give us! Very nice work!
She seems to have a happy outlook on life even after being dumped. I pray her smile will help her to find her forever home. Thanks, Liz, for sharing her story!

Good for you for posting this lovely picture and publisising your local animal rescue. My husband is a volunteer at our local shelter and it is terribly sad to see how many animals have been brought in because the owners have gone into foreclosure and can not longer take care of them. Nice heartfelt post.

Hey Sheila! Thanks for the visit. I doubt if she'll find a home - people tend to go for the younger dogs when adopting.

Your painting is very beautiful! as is the animal you painted!! You are doing a wonderful thing by helping these animals. Such a worthy cause.... I've found it interesting when I read somewhere that "dog" is "God" spelled backwards. Dogs I have known ARE gifts from God and show God-like qualities.
Hi Liz... Do you ever find out if your animal was adopted? Do people tell you that they were adopted because they saw your painting?
I was just wondering because these are such great paintings and it's a very nice cause, but I wonder how many bloggers/artists are looking to adopt studio pets...
I hope a lot of them do. I love the little spots that make this guy have eyebrows just full of curiousity!!
Now...this is a happy dog! Despite all the sadness she's had to go through. We have a lot to learn from the animals we were given to shepherd. It's a great responsibility that, for the most part, the human race has done a miserable job of handling. It's always a relief to know there are other folks out there that care. One of my kitties is a rescue animal. He's a delight and has added so much joy to our lives. Keep up the good work, Liz!

Gosh Marian, because I have only just started painting for them and because I work on African time (slow and easy - not American rush-rush!), it is difficult to guage a reaction. Hopefully the paintings will be an incentive, but at the moment, these dog paintings are of the older, and therefore less likely to be adopted dogs. DARG is a well known organisation here in CT and I've met many people who've adopted dogs from them - so maybe my little paintings will also help the cause.
