I love painting these guys. He was also in Greyton and came to fix some plumbing job whilst I was house and dog sitting. He and his workmate (colloquially known as 'handlanger') sat on the edge of the verandah in the winter sunshine fiddling and fixing whilst I took photos. Marius has the gentlest of faces I've seen for a long time - such a gentle soul, and I tried my best to capture that. I am currently doing an oil of him as well and will post that when it's finally finished - no 'painting a day' in this neck of the woods! Not just yet, anyway.

When you take the photographs, do you suppress the flash?

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all you lovely people. Di, at the moment I'm having tremendous problems with photographing the paintings. Carol showed me how to turn off the flash which is essential. Also I find the best time to take the photos is at about 6am in that lovely diffused summer morning light. After that, it's too bright. Maybe someone else can give us a tip or two on photo techniques!

Beautiful light on Marius's face, which is lovely, so open and frank. I love yesterday's portrait also--the gestures of the hands compliment her contemplative look.
