I have been corresponding with an amazing artist in Austin, Texas. Her forte is sketching but her paintings are magnificent. Virginia's blog, V ... Vaughn is an incredible collection of wildlife and domestic animal artwork. Because she's so good at it, I sent her a picture of a lion taken at the Kruger National Park and she's already done a pencil sketch prior to painting it.
Before I started writing to V, I had done my own little watercolour of two lions, also taken from a photo from the KNP. Although I don't have V's ability, I thought I would post it just for interest sake.
Check our her blog and website. She's really good.

Hi Liz,
Keep up the good work and thanks forregularly visiting my blog.
I remember a watercor artist Hazel Sloan painting wild life in Africa
ever saw her work?
Hazel Sloan is your favourite isn't she Liz?
Lovely lions - you can feel them prowling forward!
Hi Liz, well done with the lions, I particularly like the way you have painted their faces! I can see you becoming a wild life painter fundi. Have you worked with pastels? - I find these are great when painting animals.
Hi all. Thank you. Both Milind and Carol mentioned my absolute favourite watercolourist, Hazel Soan. She is on my website list if you want to look at some of her paintings. Even though she's British, she does our African wildlife, I think that's why I love her work so much. She also does painting safaris.
Di, I don't know about wildlife painter! I do enjoy painting dogs especially - they're special people! And no, I've never even tried pastels. I'm afraid I wouldn't know where to start!
Apart from being a good artist, you are a good writer too.It is a pleasure reading your stories about paintings.I hardly find anything to write along with my paintings.I must learn this art soon !!
The painting is roaring!!
Gosh Sanjeev, you are so kind. I must admit that I do like writing and it takes an effort to know when to stop.
Hi Liz.
I like the movement of the lions in this painting. Somehow it reminds me of the animation film- The Lion King. :)
You have a knack for writing too. I'll definitely revisit your blog again.
Happy New Year!
