Revised Kirstenbosch
Thank you, thank you to all for your input on my painting of the kids at Kirstenbosch. I really appreciated your input and took Celeste's advice about the orange wash as well as comments on the background.

Both versions are wonderful. I still say you are brave to paint so many faces in one painting. I would have been terrified.
The painting still looks great. I like it now. But i like it as it was before too.
The values look richer and the simpler background brings the children more into the foreground or is it the background is pushed back giving more depth. Definitely the orange has warmed the browns and blues. The children's expressions are more noticeable especially the middle child who looks a bit apprehensive. It might be that his gaze is more prominent with the simpler blue behind him.
Thank you for sharing. I'm sure it will help me be more aware of these elements.
Good JOB! The figures really do "pop" now with more contrasts. Taking out the "shrubbery" helps me see the children on the right side. :-)

Well.. this has come out really good after the changes. I liked the change of background the most. I want to be child again after seeing this. :)
Certainly a glow is added to the original version, Again, I stress that this is a winner, a brave attempt and an inspiring one at that!

Very nice change, in my humble opinion! More contrast and richer color all over. I like how you 'trimmed' the shrubbery.
Your treatment of the bushes in the back really helped the painting... I can't tell directly what the orange wash did, but I do see a more solid intense look to the painting...
Isn't it amazing what little things do... and in my case, frustrating, because I so often don't often see what needs to be done to my own paintings.

A very valued opinion Dean. Your input is always so gratefully received - I took the shrubbery out totally, but it didn't work. I too like the reduced greenery.
I guess it is quite difficult to see the difference in the pic Marian, but in 'real life' it did make a big difference toning down those very bright blues. Like you say in your post, you sometimes only pic up inconsistencies after you've taken the photo. Maybe a mirror in the artroom hmmm...

Its really good Liz, its a very interesting piece with a nice group of kids. I like the way youve amende the background it lets a bit of air into the scene.
