Air Travel aka Business Class

Karen Jurick posts the most incredible pictures for us to paint on her challenge blog.  The last one was of the airport travellers, which I did, and completed in time!  I even put it up at a local competition and was placed 13th (out of 65) for it!

BUT, and it is a huge but, no matter where I stood, no matter how hard I tried, I just could not get the glare out of the darks on the photograph.  Even with Dean's tips of indoors with a shield - nothing!

Ja,well,no,fine! as we say in this part of the world.  This problem had to be solved somehow, because I really loved the pic.

So here it is, in charcoal!  Black and white, no glary oil paint - maybe I'll try it in watercolour next!

Oh well done Liz. I had seen the challenge. But it was too tough for me even to attempt this one. I was not sure how I'll get the sense of movement of the passengers. You have done a great job.

Hi Liz, excellent work. I gave it one look and passed the challenge of moving figures. Well done!

I love Karin's challenges, but I always miss them.
You did a FABULOUS job as you always do.... I'll bet the oil is terrific as well!

Great job with the challenge. I also miss them. I'll have to make more of an effort to do them. Well done!

I agree with everyone, this is excellent. Quite complicated I think but you did a wonderful job with it. Are you doing the portrait challenge?

Wonderfully done. Your version in charcoal adds more mystery to the subject.

Thank you Prabal - I really enjoyed this one!

Hi there Marie and thank you for the compliment - I have no doubt that you could have done it!

Hello Marian! I also miss a lot of the challenges, but if I really like a pic, I do it anyway. And I sold the oil yesterday! Yay!

Thank you for visiting and the lovely compliment Becky Joy! As I've already said, if I like it, I do it even if I miss the deadline.

Hi Barbara - thank you! And every time I look in the mirror to do the portrait challenge I think, should I really do this??? Are you doing it?

Thank you so much Suzanne.

You really have a beautiful way with words Sheila! Thank you so much.

Thank you Krista. The photographing of this composition has been a mine field and even this b/w version hasn't come out that well. But it's a whole lot better than the colour one!

A very interesting view-point, you have a good charcoal drawing here.

Hi Liz

Nicely done. I really like your drawing. Maybe when the paint dries on the painting you can try again to photograph it. It would be very interesting to see it. I know what you mean about glare, I've taken pictures of paintings in the strangest locations trying to get rid of glare.

Hi Liz. I've almost given up trying to make photos of my paintings! I have lately been trying to put my paintings in "bright shade" - under the roof of a shaded porch for example - with the sun casting its shadow behind me. It's worked for a couple - but not all!?!?

Charcoal doesn't have much glare, does it? :-)

Good job - both times.

Hi, Liz...love the charcoal! That sure defeats the glare!
I forgot to mention this in my first comment on the subject, so here's a tip for the future. Paint your darks with THINNED paint. Not nearly as reflective as thick, dark, brush textured paint. Then photograph as described in my earlier post.

Thank you Carol - I'm glad it found a new home.

Gee Arti, I think I stuck my neck out too far on this one - don't know about the watercolour!

Thank you so much Di - I so appreciate your comments.

And thank you as well Shelley - unfortunately no more pics of the oil as it's gone! Just the grotty one I have on file!

Hi Ken, I really have a photographic soulmate in you! Check out Dean's advice on thinning the darks.

And thank you so much Dean! I love this blogging. I learn so much from all you guys out there!

Hi Rob, you really made me laugh - en as 'n mens se in Afrikaans, baie dankie!

Thank you so much Judy.

Hello Nancy and thank you, but no watercolour - tried it and it was a disaster - enough of this pic now. Onto others.

Wow, dramatic and different! I like it very much. Don't know if I can ever muster the courage to attempt one of these challenges - my own work is enough of a challenge to me - but I sure like seeing your results.
